Benjamin Michel

Cinematographer and Film Director

Benjamin Michel is a cinematographer and director specializing in cultural documentaries and character driven narrative films based in Tokyo, Japan.

Benjamin is a Haitian-American artist who grew up seeing fine art, photography, and films that deeply influenced me. His work as an artist explores the intersection of the mystical or ethereal with the ordinary and natural existence of things. Whether I am photographing landscapes or people I look to tell the story of their underlying spirit. So my work exposes the layered nature of all forms. In cinema I like to tell stories about characters in relentless pursuit of a personal yet universal truth. In documentaries I am fascinated by people immersed in cultural traditions or artistic expressions of humanity. As a cinematographer and director I aim to translate each story into a visual dialogue. I’m currently based in Tokyo, Japan and make films from a unique international perspective.
